Se trata de una breve presentación de los principales aspectos que deben ser tenidos en cuenta al analizar la alimentación de la embarazada para conseguir un excelente aporte nutricional y favorecer una programación (programming) metabólica correcta. En primer lugar se presentan las características del crecimiento normal. En segundo lugar, se abordan los cambios que suceden en la gestante en el transcurso del embarazo normal. En tercer lugar, se presenta una actualización de las necesidades nutricionales de la madre. A continuación, se refieren, brevemente, las consecuencias de una nutrición deficiente. Posteriormente, se revisa la teoria del programming. Finalmente, se analiza el papel del profesional sanitario para conseguir un adecuado crecimiento.

Fetal growth, nutrition of the pregnant woman and fetal programming theory

This brief article show the main aspects that must be considered when analyzing the diet of the pregnant woman in order to secure an optimum nutritional contribution and to favor an appropiate fetal programming.

Firstly, the characteristics of normal growth appear. Secondly, the changes that happen during the course of the normal pregnancy. Thirdly, we see an update of the nutritional needs of the mother. Next, the consequences of a deficient nutrition become apparent. Later, the theory of "programming" is reviewed. And finally, the role of the health professional is analysed to secure suitable growth.
